For those who might want to take a deeper look at our work or a deeper look into our code and scripts, it is all public and can be found on our GitHub here: Letters from Europe!
Mary Behrend’s travel letters from Europe are a collection of mostly typewritten letters documenting her travels across Europe with friends and family in 1955. The collection of letters are contained within 2 binders, complete with pictures. We decided to focus on a single section for the project so we chose the section documenting their travels in Norway. The section includes 5 typewritten letter across 14 pages, the rest being pictures taken by Mary. To begin the project, we took pictures of the pages we wanted to use and then transcribed the letters into digital texts. We then took the texts and turned them into marked up XML documents. While applying markup to the documents we wanted to point out general important information such as time and dates. The typewritten documents included various errors such as misspellings and missing text. Using XML markup we pointed out these errors and made the corrections. This is reflected in our display on the website with the errors being highlighted and hovering over them reveals the correction. After that we used XSLT, with the help of Dr. Bondar, to display our XML documents on our website. We displayed the letters in their original formatting with the errors visible and highlighted in different colors.
